Originality doesn’t seem to be Disney’s strong suit these days with the number of planned live-action adaptations of beloved animated classics. We saw live-action adaptations of The Jungle Book and The Beauty and the Beast recently, one was good and the other was a spunk of needlessness but there’s more on the way (a bit too many) including a Pinocchio live-action adaptation and it seems like it might start filming as early as next year.
The beloved classic from 1940 will see a live-action cash grab in the near future and is set to be directed by Paul King who directed the Paddington films. The script will be written by Chris Weitz who penned the screenplay for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Speaking to LRM, Weitz provides an update on the film revealing that it is set to begin production as early as 2019. He said:
“It’s going to shot in England and Italy starting next year. We’re still in the early stages of, you know, development and developing the script, so there’s no casting to talk about, but I’m very excited about it.”
It seems like it’s in its early stages so maybe Disney would come up with a new idea and scrap this all together….that won’t be happening, I know. Well, another one in the machine I see…. We’re going to see a Dumbo film pretty soon, a Mulan film and an Aladdin film and let’s be honest.. holy crap! I just remembered… there was a live-action Cinderella a while ago.
Weitz wrote the screenplay for that too by the way. I’ll admit I’m a little more optimistic about this one since director, King has been able to provide us two great live-action films featuring an anthropomorphic bear so maybe he won’t f–k this up.
