Sony seems to have big plans for their own Marvel Universe starting with the upcoming Venom film to be released in October. The film stars Tom Hardy as the titular character and will see him coming into contact with an alien symbiote whilst investigating the Life Foundation (he’s a journalist by the way). He becomes bonded with the symbiote which gives him superpowers and we have our film. The character is pretty iconic and since Spider-Man 3 didn’t really do the character justice, there’s a lot riding on this one to finally get it right. Although Spider-Man will not be in this film, it seems like director Ruben Fleischer already has plans for sequels.
Speaking with Comicbook.com at San Diego Comic-Con, Fleischer revealed that he has plans for a sequel along with a hint of there being a mid or post credits scene in the film. He said:
“We’ve definitely laid some groundwork for different directions that the franchise could go but obviously it all hinges on people’s excitement about this film. I hope people will stay and see what seeds have been planted.”
Well, it’s best to wait till the credits roll for this one but it really is a wonder as to the possibility of having Spider-Man in the upcoming films. Since Sony and Disney are sharing the rights to the character (Spidey not Venom), it’ll be a little confusing to see how they can possibly do this. It would still no doubt be awesome to see the arch enemies go head to head as Fleischer himself has expressed the same enthusiasm. He said:
“I think we can all agree it would be pretty amazing to see Spider-Man and Venom face off in a film. I have to think that the studio is thinking the same way and at some point down the road they’re gonna run across each other’s paths.”
The MCU saw Spider-Man finally joining the Avengers but it’s really puzzling to see the two come together especially since Venom is set to be Rated-R. The possibility of seeing Spider-Man is still in the air but honestly, I don’t care too much for continuity if there’s a good film being delivered but some may feel otherwise. For now, a good Venom film is the main priority.
Venom is set to be released on October 5, 2018
