Neill Blomkamp Promises His RoboCop Returns Will Be Rated R

None of that PG-13 nonsense.

Big news hit the net yesterday when it was announced that Neill Blomkamp and MGM are bringing back the RoboCop franchise proper with RoboCop Returns, a film that will serve as a sequel to the original RoboCop. In fact, the original draft of the script was penned by RoboCop scribes Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner. Now, the director has confirmed that it will be an R-rated affair.

In a Twitter exchange, a fan tweeted at Neill Blomkamp to make sure that the RoboCop Returns movie will have an R-rating along with some satire and exploding Squibs. Blomkamp promptly responded and simply said, “there will be all of these things.”

So, yes, there will be blood, as Neill Blomkamp and his team prepare to craft a direct sequel to the classic RoboCop movie of 1987. News of RoboCop Returns‘ R rating ought to allay fears that MGM was about to venture down the same creative avenue as José Padilha’s ill-fated reboot from 2014.

The new RoboCop Returns will have nothing to do with the reboot that was released a few years ago, which is probably a good thing. José Padilha’s 2014 reboot of the RoboCop franchise was looked down upon amongst fans and critics. In a bizarre departure from the tried-and-tested formula, the reboot served up a PG-13 movie about Detroit’s fiercest law enforcer. The results were less than stellar. Neill Blomkamp is attempting to make a proper sequel to the 1987 film with the original writers on board.

RoboCop Returns doesn’t currently have a release date.
