Wonder Woman 1984 has only just entered production, and already fans are speculating about the plot of this sequel. That’s because director Patty Jenkins tweeted a set photo showing Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor alive and well in 1984, despite the fact that he sacrificed his life during World War I. Jenkins shared a still of Chris Pine reprising his role as Trevor with this caption: “Welcome to WONDER WOMAN 1984, Steve Trevor! #WW84.”

The news of Trevor’s return immediately sent fans into the realm of speculation. Trevor, Wonder Woman’s love interest, died at the climax of 2017’s Wonder Woman after aiding Diana Prince in saving the world. His death has served as a major emotional and narrative point for Wonder Woman in the DC Extended Universe thus far, but it would appear that audiences only know part of that story.
But now for a more pressing question: how, exactly, is Steve Trevor alive? As you might recall, the first Wonder Woman introduced Trevor as an American spy who teams up with Diana during the first World War. They fall in love, but then Trevor rides off on a heroic suicide mission, sacrificing his life in order to prevent a deadly gas from being used in the war. While it’s unlikely we’ll get any answers about Steve Trevor’s return until Wonder Woman 1984 is in theaters, it is good to know that Pine still has a role in the franchise going forward.
Wonder Woman 1984 is set to hit theaters on Nov. 1, 2019.
