Solo: A Star Wars Story released recently and critical consensus indicates a fun time for audiences. Granted, it isn’t best instalment in the Star Wars franchise and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story does offer more as a spin-off. Nonetheless, critical reception has been positive but the film still leaves more to be desired. It seems that the Blu-Ray release of the film might deliver a possible deleted scene in that front.
Solo follows the iconic character of Han Solo and his exploits before becoming the smuggler he is known for in previous Star Wars films. Starring Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Emilia Clarke as Qi’Ra, Woody Harrelson as Tobias Beckett and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, the film explores much of what has been associated with the character such as the Kessel Run along with how he meets Lando and Chewbacca. It also explores briefly, his time in the Imperial Force which the film didn’t spend much time on.
Writers Lawrence Kasdan and Jonathan Kasdan have revealed that there was more to that in a scene that ended up on the cutting room floor. Speaking to IndieWire, the father-son duo revealed a deleted scene that Jonathan himself was in:
“I believe that when you finally get a Blu-ray of this movie, you’ll see a terrific scene with Han in aerial training and then getting kicked out of aerial training. [laughs] And ultimately, with a cameo by me. The reason I decided to do a cameo in that particular scene is we were sure it wouldn’t get cut out, and of course it did. Ultimately, I think you would think, and all people would agree, that the trajectory of the movie is helped by not having it. But it is a moment that we too would have loved to see more of and really believe in.”
Han’s experience fighting for the Empire was relatively abrupt and it’s a shame that the film did not explore much of this. It would have showed a lot more character development and his frustration before leaving was not established aside from some brief annoyances with the way Imperial troops had to handle things.
One of the main gripes would be that Han did not showcase much character development and this scene may have delivered in that regard. We did see Han’s rebellious nature but it would have been nice to see it fleshed out a little more. If all goes well, we would be able to see it on Blu-Ray.
