The long-gestating, rated-R horror-comedy The Happytime Murders finally filmed last year and the trailer is finally out. Brian Henson, son of the late Muppets creator, Jim Henson, and director of The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island, is back behind the camera for this film. Unlike Henson’s previous endeavors, Happytime Murders certainly isn’t kid-friendly, and the NSFW debut trailer proves that.
The Happytime Murders is a filthy comedy set in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles where puppets and humans coexist. Two clashing detectives with a shared secret, one human (Melissa McCarthy) and one puppet, are forced to work together again to solve the brutal murders of the former cast of a beloved classic puppet television show.
In the first trailer, the Oscar-nominated star of Bridesmaids and Spy is seen doing ecstasy at gunpoint and being propositioned by puppet prostitutes. “That is good shit!” she yells after seemingly coming back from the dead. We see solicitation. “You looking for some rotten cotton?” one of the grimier sex workers taunts. Brass-knuckle street fights and oral sex for less than a dollar were all included. And all of that was perpetrated by the puppets. The closing scene featured a lengthy male puppet’s orgasm that resulted in quite a bit of silly string.
The Happytime Murders, also starring Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale and Elizabeth Banks, comes to theaters on August 16.
