What’s going on with Meryl Streep’s character in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again? When the first trailer for the film came out, Donna was only mentioned in the past tense by her daughter, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried). The trailer sparked frantic conversation, did Donna die? The latest promo for the sequel remains ambiguous over what exactly has happened to Meryl Streep’s Donna, but there is a bigger glimpse at Cher’s role, including a clip of her performing fan favourite Fernando.
The latest trailer doesn’t exactly provide answers, but it also doesn’t disprove the theory. Not only does Donna appear to be dead, but now Sophie herself is pregnant, and terrified about doing it by herself. In the trailer, a pregnant Sophie calls on the help of her mother’s friends and former bandmates Tanya and Rosie as she prepares for motherhood. “I never did ask you guys, what happened when you met my mother?” she asks. From there, the trailer begins to tell the story of a young Donna, in musical form, of course. Lily James stars as Donna in her younger years.
The new clip also features Cher, who joins the cast as Sophie’s grandmother, Ruby. Ruby tells Sophie she wants to finally be a proper grandmother. “I’ve decided to commit to being a grandmother,” says Cher’s character after flying into town on a helicopter. “Grandma, you weren’t invited,” says Seyfried. “That’s the best kind of party,” replies Cher.
The film looks pretty much like what you’d expect from a Mamma Mia! sequel. There’s beautiful scenery, ABBA songs, and everyone having a grand old time. Streep and the other original stars, including Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, also return for the movie, which will switch between the past and present. Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, and Julie Walters are among the returning stars. The film also stars Lily James and Cher.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! hits theaters on July 19.
