It isn’t a stretch to say that the ending of Avengers: Infinity War is one of the most mind-blowing endings to a comic book movie. Despite the efforts of earth’s mightiest heroes, Thanos successfully procures all six Infinity Stones, snaps his fingers and kills off half the galaxy’s population and most of The Avengers. The villain actually triumphs.

Spider-Man’s death scene is definitely the standout, as Tom Holland delivered a raw, emotionally harrowing performance during Peter Parker’s dying moments. It’s a great scene that will be remembered for a very long time. And it looks like Groot’s death sequence is also rather emotionally scarring, after this revelation from Guardians of the Galaxy helmer, James Gunn.
As Groot begins to turn to dust, the devastated Rocket approaches him and is on the receiving end of one final “I am Groot.” When asked on twitter, what Groot’s final “I am Groot” meant, James Gunn had this to say:
