Netflix’s The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron follows a group of immortal warriors led by Andy (Theron), who must fight to keep their identity a secret when a new immortal is discovered. The fantasy action film about a group of immortal warriors has been receiving fairly decent reviews from critics. As of now, it has an 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average critic score of 6.5/10. Our resident film critic, Samuel Lim enjoyed the film as well, saying “set apart by a unique supernatural premise, emotionally resonant performances and powerhouse action scenes, The Old Guard has plenty of new tricks to spare.”
But if you’ve watched the film, you’ll know that it was mostly just set up. It feels like a first episode of a TV series that sets up a fantasy universe full of potential. While I personally wasn’t a big fan of the film, I’m certainly looking forward to the second one. While there hasn’t been an official announcement of a sequel, Charlize Theron, who’s also a producer of the film, recently teased what we could potentially see in The Old Guard 2. Going on the Late Night with Seth Meyers show, Theron said:
“The character of Quynh is kind of teased in this. She’s Andy’s kind of right-hand person. She was, the two of them, were the first. There’s obviously a relationship there that we didn’t really explore in this film. So, I’m excited if we get the chance to make another one, to explore that because then we’re just adding another female into the mix, which I think will make it really interesting.“
The Old Guard is currently streaming on Netflix.
