David Ayer is Ready For the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad to be Released

Over the past couple of days, we’ve reported that following the official announcement of Justice League Snyder Cut, David Ayer too, is hopeful that his cut of 2016’s critically panned and financially underwhelming Suicide Squad will see the light of day. Ayer has always been vocal about the differences between his vision for Suicide Squad and the hot mess we actually saw on screen, but the conversation certainly intensified this week after the Snyder Cut announcement by Zack Snyder.

The discussion which mainly consisted of Ayer having fun back and forth with fans culminated in Ayer co-signing an idea pitched by Collider‘s editor-in-chief, Steve Weintraub on Twitter. Weintraub wrote, “The version of #SuicideSquad that we’ve all seen was not the movie [Ayer] wanted to release. With the popularity of the superhero genre, why not show his cut on [HBO Max]? also, unlike #TheSnyderCut which needs a lot of work, I think Ayer’s cut is close to done.”

David Ayer quote tweeted Weintraub’s suggestion and said:

“This is a good question. My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment. The film I made has never been seen.”

While a part of me certainly would love to watch Ayer’s unblemished vision for the film, I also don’t think we need it. We (or at least I) do not need to concern myself with what could’ve been, when Warner Bros and DC have already found their footing over the past couple of years and moved on. In fact, Suicide Squad is getting a soft-reboot treatment of sorts, this time spearheaded by James Gunn, the man behind the highly successful Guardians of the Galaxy films. Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, will retain some of the original cast such as Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney. With that in mind, do we really need an Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad?
