Black Widow is finally going to get a standalone film after all this time with Cate Shortland attached to direct it. Natasha Romanoff has been a staple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since its early days and it really is puzzling as to why she hasn’t gotten a standalone earlier. It is unclear when the film will be released but we can expect it to begin production this year ahead of a tentative 2020 release date.
Not much is known about the film in regards to its approach and tone but recently, there was word of Black Widow possibly being the MCU’s first Rated-R flick. Although, the film being Rated-R may suit the dark backstory of Natasha Romanoff, it looks like that may not really be the case in the end.
Marvel boss Kevin Feige spoke to Comicbook and was asked on the possibility of Black Widow being Rated-R to which Feige clarifies that to have never been part of the plan. He said:
“It never was going to be. Somebody writes, ‘I hear it’s R-rated!’ And then everybody writes it up.”
Well, it’s not a big surprise since the films in the MCU have always been PG-13 and the franchise has raked in ten truckloads of cash so the PG-13 route is always the safest way to ensure the most profit. Granted, Rated-R comic book films have proven to be quite successful at the box-office lately with films like Deadpool, its sequel Deadpool 2 and Logan so maybe they should give it a shot.
Perhaps this mostly has to do with how the MCU tackles films and Rated-R has never really been their style. That doesn’t mean we won’t see a Rated-R MCU flick but let’s not expect guts, gore, sex and f–ks in the following Avengers film.
