It’s been awhile, but the film that kicked off the DC Extended Universe has yet to receive sequel treatment. Christopher McQuarrie has expressed interest in directing the sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel.
In a recent Twitter Q & A, McQuarrie, who previously directed the critically acclaimed Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (and written the likes of The Usual Suspects and Edge of Tomorrow), was asked if he would like to direct the next Superman film. To which he said, “They know where to find me.”
Cavill, who played Superman in the DCEU films also played a role in McQuarrie’s Mission Impossible: Fallout was required to have a mustache for the shoot and that clashed with re-shoots of Justice League which needed to be removed digitally. It’s unclear if there would be some hostility there but McQuarrie has already been linked to the DCEU in the past with reports of him under consideration to direct a Green Lantern Corps film.
There are many questions as to the state of the DCEU especially in comparison to the Marvel Cinematic Universe which seems to be on the right track both financially and critically. With the release of the critically acclaimed Wonder Woman, fans were beginning to wonder if the DCEU had found its footing, but then came Justice League and we all know how that turned out.
Nonetheless, McQuarrie would be an interesting choice for Man of Steel 2, having proven himself as an efficient action film director. He might be able to inject some life back into the DCEU. But for now, it’s all just speculation.
