The director’s chair for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still empty and although the film is still happening, it’s relatively hard to say who will take on the reins. After James Gunn (who directed the first two films) was fired from directing the film after a bunch of old offensive tweets of his resurfaced, the state of the third installment was in the air. With this in mind, some could assume that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi would make a great director for the film but sadly, it looks like that won’t be happening.
Waititi directed What We do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople before injecting life into the Thor series with Ragnarok blending some unique visuals and humor that would in turn lead to the series’ best installment. Both Gunn and Waititi are able to provide plenty of cool visuals and humor so Waititi would be a nice successor to Gunn but it looks like the Ragnarok director doesn’t wanna touch it considering it to be Gunn’s baby.
At FX TCA today (via Deadline), Waititi revealed that he’s definitely not directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 despite expressing interest in making another film with Marvel. He said:
“For me, those are James (Gunn)’s films. Going into something like that with his stamp all over his films, would be like going into someone’s house and saying ‘Hey, I’m your new dad, and this is how we make peanut butter sandwiches now. It feels kind of awkward.”
That’s a shame, Waititi would be a solid replacement and it really sucks that we’re even talking about this cause Gunn was doing such as great job with the Guardians films. Hell, maybe if more directors turn down the project, Disney would come to their senses and rehire Gunn. Probably not but it may be some time till we see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 but once there are some developments on that, we’ll have more to speculate on.
