If you are yet to see The Incredibles, it might be a mystery to you as to who The Underminer is. With Incredibles 2 being released later this year, this would be a good time to watch/rewatch the original as it looks like the sequel will pick up exactly where the original left off: with the Parr family preparing themselves for a fight The Underminer.
Prior to the release of the first trailer, many theorised that Incredibles 2 will be set years after The Incredibles, with Dash and Violet perhaps in their late teens or early 20s and Jack Jack in school. However, such is not the case.
The director of The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, Brad Bird, deliberately opted to go with this approach instead of doing a time jump as seen in other Pixar sequels such as Toy Story 3. Screen Rant was at a recent press conference in which Brad Bird discussed how the choice of aging the characters wouldn’t have aligned with the core familial ideas present in The Incredibles:
“Men are always expected to be strong, so I had Bob have super strength. Mothers are always pulled in a million different directions, so I had her be elastic. Teenagers are insecure and defensive, so I had Violet have force fields and invisibility. Ten-year-olds are energy balls that can’t be stopped. And babies are unknowns.”
The familial dynamics present are an integral part of this franchise. A time jump may have allowed Pixar to tackle other ideas but it is far more appealing to see these characters as they were fourteen years ago.
