Hell yes!! Netflix is all set to produce a six-part series titled The Ghost Bride adapted from a novel of the same title penned by a Malaysian author. Not only that, the series will be helmed by acclaimed Malaysian filmmakers Quek Shio-Chuan who recently directed the critically celebrated Guang, and Ho Yuhang who’s known for his work on At the End of Daybreak and an episode of HBO’s Folklore.
The New York Times best-selling novel by Yangsze Choo is set in 1890s colonial Melaka and centres around Li Lan who gets offered a marriage proposal from a rich family to become a “ghost bride” to their recently deceased son. This ritual is usually conducted to placate restless spirits which in the case of Choo’s novel, is the son of the rich family who died under strange circumstances. Accepting the proposal would save Li Lian’s family from a lifetime of debt, but going through with the ritual would lead her to be haunted by her “ghost husband” for the rest of her life.

Variety reports that production for The Ghost Bride is now underway in Malaysia. Working together with the directing duo is screenwriter Kai Yu Wu (Hannibal, The Flash) who will be leading a team of writers from the US and Taiwan.
The Ghost Bride has a cool cast attached to it such as Huang Peijia and Wu Kang-jen, both hailing from Taiwan as well as Malaysian actor and theatre artist Tian Tze Kuang. What many might find exciting is the inclusion of Ludi Len who played the Black Ranger in the 2017 Power Rangers movie.
The series seems to be shaping up to be something must-see. This production comes at the heels of the acclaimed Crossroads: One Two Jaga which was also a Malaysian production that was released worldwide on Netflix. The Ghost Bride is a pretty big deal for the Malaysian film and television industry. If this series receives positive word of mouth from Malaysians and international audiences, it could potentially push the local industry to a whole different level. We can’t wait!
