We’re just 10 days away from witnessing one of the most eagerly anticipated films of all time. There’s no denying that Avengers: Infinity War is THE event film of this generation, perhaps even more so than Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But it seems like the peeps in Indonesia will be getting a slightly trimmed down version of this movie.
According to the prominent Indonesian website, Kompas.com, the 19th entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be 7 minutes shorter in Indonesia due to censorship. In Indonesia, Infinity War will be clocking in at 149 minutes — the film’s official duration is 156 minutes.
The chairman of Indonesia’s Film Censorship Institute (LSF), Ahmad Yani Basuki had this to say to Kompas:
“I have not seen it yet, but I am the one who signed off on it. I do not know exactly what exactly was censored or revised … The point in general [is that] many films are revised.”
It does strike me a little weird that the Chairman of the LSF signed off on the censorship process despite not knowing what exactly is being censored. But he did go on to say that audiences that are in the 13-year-old age group tend to imitate what they see on screen, and the cuts are made with that in mind.
It’s unclear as of now, which scene/scenes exactly are being censored.
Avengers: Infinity War won’t be the first (but hopefully is the last) Marvel film to be censored for audiences outside the United States. A few months ago, Black Panther underwent a very slight censorship — one word to be exact — in India. One of the scenes in that movie has Winston Duke’s character, M’Baku hails his God by saying, “glory to Hanuman.” The word ‘Hanuman’ was muted in India as Hanuman is a popular deity in Hinduism, the biggest religion in the country. Apparently, there were concerns in India about the reference being culturally offensive. I don’t know about people in India, but everyone in my family is Hindu and they found it pretty damn cool that Hanuman was mentioned in the movie.
