We don’t know if we’ll be seeing Henry Cavill back as Superman anytime soon but it looks like the actor has landed the role as another iconic character with cool abilities, Geralt of Rivia. Yes, Netflix has announced that Henry Cavill will play the role as “The Witcher” Geralt in Netflix’s live-action Witcher series.
Based off the video games series of the same name, based off the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, the story follows Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, “as he struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts”. Meeting a “powerful sorceress” and a “young princess with a dangerous secret” the three must survive this tale that takes them across a dangerous Continent.
Lauren S. Hissrich (Daredevil) will serve as show-runner for the show and will consists of eight episodes to be potentially released in 2020 as revealed by Hissrich on Twitter a while back. The show has been planned since 2017 and it looks like they’re making some progress especially now that they have a lead. Hissrich, who also serves as executive producer will be joined by Alik Sakharov (Game of Thrones) who will take on the same role and will also direct the first four episodes. The later episodes will be directed by Alex Garcia Lopez (Luke Cage) and Charlotte Brandstorm (Outlander).
The Witcher series has a pretty large fanbase and it’s safe to say the acclaimed video games had a lot to do with that. Cavill’s casting is a little weird since Geralt is f–king old and one would say that this is honestly a bad casting choice. Cavill is way too pretty to play Geralt (that’s not to say that Geralt is ugly) and it would honestly make a little more sense to have a more rugged, older actor play him. We know that he can pull off facial hair a’la Mission-Impossible: Fallout so maybe with the right touches, he’d make a great Geralt. Or maybe they may even go a different route with this.
