Damien Chazelle’s upcoming First Man is quite possibly one of the most anticipated films of the year. Starring Ryan Reynolds as Neil Armstrong, the film will chronicle the story of the Apollo 11 moon landing. We all know, how it went down… Stanley Kubrick directed it. Okay, probably not but the film will chronicle the efforts of Apollo 11’s historical undertaking and is looking to be one of the best films of the year. A new trailer has been dropped and it seems like it may be a far different from Chazelle’s previous effort, La La Land.
Along with Reynolds, the film also stars Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Corey Stoll and Kyle Chandler. The new trailer seems to be providing a more ominous feel, almost like a thriller and is definitely stressing the familial aspects surrounding Armstrong. It sure as hell looks like it’s really emphasizing the gravity of the situation. Claire Foy who plays Armstrong’s wife provides a huge element to it all and it seems that her character and his kids will provide Armstrong with some strong internal conflict.
I can’t help feeling a Nolan-esque vibe (a little bit) to this trailer especially with the music that is highly reminiscent to Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar but one thing to note here is that unlike Interstellar, this film seems to be fairly more ominous and heavy at least based off the trailer. I’m not saying that Interstellar isn’t either of those but Nolan’s film did offer a sense of wonder and hope whereas this trailer seems to reside in the dramatic thriller realm.
I am definitely looking forward to this film and it’s safe to say that this is going to be an Oscar contender. Chazelle has already won an Academy Award for Best Director for La La Land, making him the youngest to receive such an honor and his previous effort, Whiplash can be considered a masterpiece. Mark your calendars, this is going to be one hell of a ride.
