Some of you may know that there’s going to be a live action adaptation of Disney’s 1992 animated classic Aladdin because f–k it, who has time to come up with new ideas right? The film will star Will Smith as the Genie since Robin Williams killed himself (R.I.P. by the way, loved that man), Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine. The film is expected to have some changes but it is unclear as to how far they will go with it. However, we know that there will some changes in regards to the film’s music along with some additions.
Speaking to Variety, Aladdin songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul shared some new information regarding the film’s soundtrack. They revealed that there will be some new songs in the upcoming film and that some of the beloved songs we’ve come to know will be getting a remix with J.Cole…. okay, that’s not true but the songs will be getting a makeover however.
First things first, Jasmine will be getting a new solo and Naomi Scott apparently nailed it. Paul revealed, “We got to write a new song for Jasmine, (Composer) Alan (Menken) wrote a beautiful piece of music and (Scott) is incredible.” They also wrote a duet for Aladdin and Jasmine along with a new verse for the classic “Arabian Nights” because why the f–k not right?
This may seem like I’m taking a dump on the idea of a live action Aladdin, that’s because I am. Last year’s Beauty and the Beast cash grab didn’t really serve up anything much to the table and didn’t need to happen. However, this film could be good and so could the songs. The live action Jungle Book film was pretty good and they managed to do the older renditions of the songs justice and provided a cool twist on them. Pasek and Paul have been doing well with their songs in La La Land and “This Is Me” was probably the only good thing to come out of The Greatest Showman so maybe this could turn out pretty well.
