Warner Bros. is taking the DC Extended Universe underwater with the release of the upcoming Aquaman, starring Game of Thrones alum Jason Momoa. The trailer was another strong showing for Warner Brothers at this year’s Comic-Con as their work on the DC Extended Universe franchise continues to grow.
Directed by James Wan, Momoa stars as Arthur Curry, a half-human, half-Atlantean man caught between two worlds. The son of Atlantean royalty and heir to the ocean throne, Aquaman’s allegiance is tested when his half-brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson), prepares to unite the seven kingdoms and wage war against the surface dwellers that threaten the oceans.
Amber Heard also stars as Mera, the daughter and future queen of the Xebel, an Atlantean tribe headed up by King Nereus, played by Dolph Lundgren. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will portray Black Manta, a ruthless mercenary treasure hunter and Aquaman’s greatest foe.
The trailer introduces Curry’s mother Queen Atlanna and lighthouse keeper father and shows us Aquaman in action foiling pirates hijacking a Russian submarine. The trailer also gives us a glimpse of Aquaman facing off against his power-mad half-brother King Orm and Aquaman and Mera on a quest across the surface world for the Trident of Neptune for the power to rule the underwater world.
Aquaman has the ability to control the tides, communicate with other sea life, swim at supersonic speeds, and possess superhuman strength. It seems almost unfair to the bad guys that he gets a trident and scale armor to top it all off.
The film, which also stars Willem Dafoe and Nicole Kidman, swims into theaters on December 21.
