Despite the disappointing box-office returns of Solo: A Star Wars Story, plans for Star Wars spin-off films still remain including a Boba Fett spin-off. The film has been planned for some time but it looks like it’ll be a while till we see the film centered on the fan-favorite bounty hunter as it probably won’t begin production until 2020.
According to Omega Underground, the film is expected to be filmed at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England. Director James Mangold known for his directorial efforts in the critically acclaimed Logan will be helming the project following the departure of Josh Trank. However, it doesn’t look like production will be starting soon as Mangold is looking to begin his production for Ford vs Ferrari soon and would not likely have the time to take on the Star Wars spin-off in the time being.
From this, it can be deduced that Ford vs Ferrari will be looking at a 2019 release along with some chances of Oscar buzz. It also looks like the Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off is more likely to be released before the Boba Fett film, perhaps a 2020 release.
This seems like a wise move as the returns of Solo clearly indicate something on audiences’ perception on recent Star Wars films, particularly the spin-offs. There’s a chance that franchise fatigue maybe dawning on audiences especially with the mixed fan reception of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. There’s even a possibility of audience indifference or at least low interest for Star Wars films centered on a singular supporting character from the original trilogy no matter how iconic they may be.
However, there are various aspects that attributed to the box-office returns of Solo, from its marketing campaign along with its release date amidst juggernauts such as Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 but it’s best for Lucasfilm to focus on Episode XI for now. If all goes well with this one, things could turn out much better for the future of the franchise.
