John Cena looks like he’ll be threading the path of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as he looks like he’ll be included in more films in the future. Although Cena has been in the acting game for a while now, he is not as established as Johnson but that seems to be changing as he will be a part of Jackie Chan’s upcoming action thriller, Project X and no, its not the party comedy film of the same name.
According to Variety, Cena is replacing legendary old-timer Sylvester Stallone in the film and is set to be directed by Scott Waugh known for directorial works in Act of Valor and Need for Speed. Cena will also star in the Bumblebee, the latest film in the Transformers series and has recently starred in the comedy film Blockers which was met with positive reviews.
Project X will follow a Chinese private security contractor, played by Chan as he is tasked with extracting oil workers from a refinery that’s been attacked. He teams up with former U.S. Marine played by Cena (of course) when he finds out the attackers are planning to steal the oil.
Chan has been in the business for a long time and has proven himself to be an enigmatic presence on screen. With Hong Kong action classics like Drunken Master and Police Story along with Hollywood films like the Rush Hour franchise, Chan has entertained audiences through the years. Hopefully Cena will be able to keep up and maybe learn a thing or two if he is looking to reach the Hollywood heights of his fellow WWE counterpart.
However, this film seems like a relatively simple one with a generic premise and director Scott Waugh doesn’t really have a great track record even in the action genre. Act of Valor and Need for Speed did not receive positive reception but maybe Chan and Cena’s presence would be enough to at least make it watchable.
