Jared Leto’s incarnation of Batman villain The Joker, seen in 2016’s Suicide Squad, may be getting his own movie. Jared Leto’s Joker didn’t get as much screen time in Suicide Squad as some fans may have wanted, but Warner Bros. and DC are looking to rectify that mistake.
Variety reports that Jared Leto is set to star and exec produce an untitled standalone film, paving the way for future movies branching from Suicide Squad. Plot details are currently unknown, but the studio’s idea is to expand on the world created by Suicide Squad and tie into future installments of that property.
Not only is this Leto’s chance to redeem himself, but it marks the second Joker movie Warner Bros. is reportedly interested in developing. In 2017, Warner Bros. and DC revealed that they were developing a Joker origin-story movie that would be entirely separate from Jared Leto’s portrayal of the character. Now, the studio is pursuing another standalone Joker film, but this one will star Leto in the title role.
Although Leto’s Joker was featured heavily in the marketing of Suicide Squad, he only appeared briefly in the film, which focused on a motley crew of supervillains coerced into carrying out a black-ops mission for the U.S. government. The movie was poorly reviewed but succeeded at the worldwide box office.
Warner Bros. currently has three upcoming DC movies on the calendar. December’s Aquaman, April 2019’s Shazam! and November 2019’s Wonder Woman 2. Warner Bros. also announced that Margot Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn would be getting her own movie with a Birds of Prey feature.
