The X-Men film series has had its ups and its downs. Whether it’s through the through the soaring heights of X-Men: Days of Future Past or the crushing lows of X-Men Origins: The Last Stand, audiences are still on board to further explore the characters from Xavier’s Academy of Gifted Youngsters. X:Men Apocalypse may have messed some things up but it wasn’t horrible. The next entry in the series will tackle one of the most compelling story-lines in the comics…. again.
In an interview with Collider, Quicksilver actor Evan Peters reveals some information on what we can expect in the latest installment of the series, Dark Phoenix. He states:
“This one is a much more serious film about the internal struggle of Phoenix and Jean, so it’s a dramatic film. There’s nothing very comedic about it, other than the few moments that are in there. I think it’s gonna be a powerful one. It’s Dark Phoenix. I think it’s gonna be darker than we’re used to. It’s gonna be a change, but it’s gonna be fun for everybody. “
The story-line of the film is based on the popular X-Men comic arc known as The Dark Phoenix Saga. The arc sees the near unstoppable Jean Grey unleash the full power of her psychic abilities when she is possessed by a cosmic entity of rebirth known as the Phoenix Force.
The X-Men films have never been too lighthearted mostly due to the public’s perception on mutants in the films. It’s safe to say that they have injected moments of humor quite well and have done so tastefully (for the most part) despite some relatively disappointing films. Hopefully, it won’t be The Dark Knight dark cause it wouldn’t align too well with some aspects of the film series including the character of Quicksilver himself along with the usual banter between some notable characters.
Earlier attempts at adapting this arc has been less than successful (X-Men: The Last Stand comes to mind) so it is certainly interesting to see how director Simon Kinberg takes a crack at it. This would be Kinberg’s directorial debut, having been a screenwriter for some of the X-Men films. Hopefully, he’ll be able to do the story-line some justice.
