Tom Holland Was Unaware Of That Infinity War Scene Until Filming

Well, you can’t spoil the movie if you don’t know the ending.

Fans have had a week to process and digest the shocking turn of events of Avengers: Infinity War. To say that the ending of Infinity War was unexpected is a massive understatement. One of the most heartbreaking scenes at the end was between Iron Man and Spider-Man. Thanos, successful in obtaining all of the infinity stones, snaps his fingers. A series of tragic moments ensue, as iconic characters from the MCU turn into dust and fade into oblivion. While most deaths were fairly quick, there was one in particular that lasted much longer; Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Peter remarks his now famous last words; “I don’t feel good” and “I don’t want to go” as he falls into Tony Stark’s arms and hugs him. Peter apologizes and disappears as Tony can only look on in horror.

A scene of such emotional burden surely requires tons of preparation by the actors before shooting right? Well, not according to Tom Holland. While speaking at a Q&A for his charity The Brothers Trust, Holland revealed he only just found out about that scene right before filming, according to a report from Webbed Media. Talk about spontaneity. Let’s not forget Holland’s erratic history with spoilers. Holland is atrocious when it comes to handling spoilers, so it’s best that the Russos’ kept him in the dark with this one.

Holland revealed that the death scene with Robert Downey Jr. was improvised. He noted that all he did was say “I don’t want to go” several times, making the scene more natural and organic. Holland also lavished praise on Downey Jr. for his ability to ad-lib, calling him the king of improvisation. Apart from that, Holland admitted that seeing his death scene for the first time was very emotional for him. He had such a great time shooting the scene, however, seeing the depressing nature of the movie was jarring.

Holland was one of this film’s standout performers and the fact that his scene with Downey Jr. was improvised further boosts his stock. Holland will be back in next year’s Avengers 4, so the MCU can expect more brilliant performances from him.

Avengers: Infinity War is now playing in theaters.
