The tumultuous production of the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story mostly due to its director changes could cause fans of the titular character and the Star Wars Universe cautious about the end product. In many cases, directorial changes could make one wonder: “How did the first guy mess up?”.
The Lego Movie directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller were probably the butt of those questions after being replaced by Ron Howard for the latest Solo film. Star of the latest installment of the Star Wars canon, Alden Ehrenreich, on the other hand, defends the two, preferring their film-making approach.
Despite several rumors surfacing over Lord and Miller’s presence on set with some claiming they were disliked by the cast and crew, Ehrenreich dispelled these and further elaborated by describing their comedic style of film-making as playful, allowing for a unique approach to the film. In a recent interview with Esquire, he stated:
On a personal level, it felt emotional, for them to be going after we’d set out on that course together. Because I spent a lot of time with them, and we had a really good relationship
Most of the film was already shot under the direction of Lord and Miller and Howard’s job was to wrap things up nicely. Not a lot has been said about what really happened between Lord and Miller and the studio executives as Ehrenreich himself was unaware of anything that was going on behind the scenes.
Howard is no doubt a prominent filmmaker in his own right with two Academy Awards under his belt but it’s a wonder how Lord and Miller’s more comedic and youthful approach to film-making will tie into his more mature take. It could be the greatest thing ever or an inconsistent mess, or maybe even something in between.
